They file your Self Assessment or company accounts, help you set money aside for tax when your income is uneven, advise on VAT for UK and overseas clients, claim the expenses you're entitled to, and tell you when switching from sole trader to limited company would save you money.

The freelance tax questions we solve
Freelancing brings questions that a salaried job never did. These are the ones we help with most.
Uneven income
A big month can lead to a big tax bill, plus payments on account towards next year. We show you what to put aside so January never comes as a shock.
Overseas clients
Working with clients abroad changes how VAT applies. We make sure your invoices are right and that foreign income is reported correctly.
Platform income
Earnings from Upwork, Fiverr and similar platforms are now reported to HMRC. We make sure your return matches what the platforms send.
Invoicing and records
We set you up with cloud software for professional invoices and tidy records, so you can see who's paid and what you're owed.
Working from home
Laptops, software subscriptions, a share of your bills and home office costs. We claim what you're entitled to and nothing that would raise questions.
Going limited
As your profits grow, a limited company can reduce your tax. We run the numbers and handle the switch when the time is right.

Should you freelance as a sole trader or a limited company?
There's no single right answer. It depends on your profit, your clients and how much admin you're comfortable with. These signs can help.
A sole trader may suit you if…
- You're starting out or testing freelance work
- Your profits are modest
- You want the least paperwork
- Your clients don't require you to have a company
A limited company may suit you if…
- Your profits are growing steadily
- Clients or agencies ask you to work through a company
- You want to separate business and personal finances
- You plan to take on bigger contracts
Working through a company on long contracts for one client? IR35 rules may apply. See our contractors page.

Freelancer FAQs
Do freelancers need an accountant?
You don't have to use one, but many freelancers find it worthwhile. An accountant makes sure your income from different clients is reported correctly, claims every allowable expense, helps you plan for payments on account and tells you when a limited company would save you tax.
Should I freelance as a sole trader or a limited company?
Most freelancers start as sole traders because it's simpler. A limited company can become more tax-efficient as profits grow, and some clients prefer to work with a company. The right choice depends on your profit, plans and circumstances, so we'll run the numbers with you.
Do I charge VAT to overseas clients?
If you're VAT registered and supply services to a business client outside the UK, the service is usually outside the scope of UK VAT, so you don't add UK VAT to the invoice. Different rules can apply to overseas consumers and to certain services, so we'll check your situation.
What expenses can freelancers claim?
You can claim costs incurred wholly and exclusively for your freelance work. Common examples include computer equipment, software subscriptions, a share of home running costs, phone and internet use, professional memberships, training that updates existing skills, and business travel.
How do payments on account work?
If your last Self Assessment bill was over £1,000, HMRC asks you to pay towards next year's bill in advance, in two instalments due on 31 January and 31 July. This often catches out new freelancers in their first or second year, so we help you plan for it.
Does HMRC know about my Upwork or Fiverr income?
Yes. Under the digital platform reporting rules, freelance marketplaces send HMRC details of what users earn through them each year. Your tax return needs to include this income, and we can help correct earlier years if needed.
How much does an accountant for freelancers cost?
It depends on whether you work as a sole trader or limited company, how many clients and transactions you have, and whether you're VAT registered. We charge one fixed monthly fee, agreed before we start. You can compare packages on our freelancer pricing page.
Can you help with IR35?
Yes. IR35 mainly affects people working through their own limited company on longer contracts for one client. Our contractors service covers IR35 reviews, and we can help you understand whether it applies to you.
