Paying yourself as a director in 2026/27
Most directors take a mix of salary and dividends. The right mix depends on these rates, which we review for you every year.
Personal Allowance
The amount of income you can receive each year before Income Tax is due.
Dividend tax
Rates in the basic and higher rate bands, after the £500 dividend allowance. The additional rate is 39.35%.
Corporation Tax
Dividends are paid from profits after Corporation Tax, so salary and dividends are taxed differently.
Employer's National Insurance
Paid by the company on salary above £5,000 a year.
Employment Allowance
Available if your company employs someone other than a sole director, which can change the best salary level.
Paperwork
Dividends need enough retained profit, plus board minutes and vouchers. We prepare these for you.

Limited Company FAQs
Does a limited company need an accountant?
There's no legal requirement, but most directors use one. A limited company must file statutory accounts with Companies House and a Corporation Tax return with HMRC every year, run payroll and keep proper records. An accountant makes sure this is done correctly and plans your tax, which usually saves more than it costs.
How should I pay myself from my limited company?
Most directors take a modest salary and the rest as dividends. Salary is a deductible cost for the company, while dividends are paid from profit after Corporation Tax and are currently taxed at 10.75% in the basic rate band. The best mix depends on your other income and whether your company can claim the Employment Allowance.
What is a director's loan account?
It records money you take from the company that isn't salary, dividends or expense repayments, and money you lend to it. If you owe the company money nine months after the year end, a temporary tax charge of 35.75% of the amount owed can apply until it's repaid.
When are my company accounts due?
Your first accounts are due 21 months after incorporation. After that, accounts are due at Companies House 9 months after your company's year end. Corporation Tax is payable 9 months and 1 day after the end of your accounting period.
Can I pay myself dividends if the company made a loss?
No. Dividends can only be paid from retained profits, which are profits after tax that haven't already been paid out. Paying a dividend without enough profit can make it unlawful, so we check your figures before each dividend.
Do I need to file a tax return as a director?
Usually, yes, especially if you receive dividends above the dividend allowance or other untaxed income. We prepare and file your personal Self Assessment return alongside your company's accounts.
What happens if my company is dormant?
A dormant company still has to file annual accounts and a confirmation statement with Companies House, and tell HMRC it isn't trading. We keep these filings up to date so the company stays in good standing.
How much does an accountant for limited companies cost?
It depends on your turnover, number of directors and employees, whether you're VAT registered and how often you want reports. We charge one fixed monthly fee, agreed before we start. You can compare packages on our limited company pricing page.
