In short
What does an accountant for employed individuals do?
An accountant for employed individuals makes sure people paid through PAYE pay the right amount of tax. They check your tax code, claim refunds for work expenses you've paid yourself, file a Self Assessment return when you have other income or owe the High Income Child Benefit Charge, and help higher earners reduce tax through pensions and Gift Aid.

Do employees need a tax return?
Most people who are only paid through PAYE don't. But other income, benefits or claims can mean you do. These signs help you check.
You'll usually need a return if you…
- Have self-employed or side income over £1,000
- Receive rental income from property
- Owe the High Income Child Benefit Charge
- Have untaxed savings, dividend or foreign income above your allowances
- Sold shares, crypto or property at a taxable gain
You usually won't need one if…
- All your income is taxed through PAYE
- Your savings interest is within your savings allowance
- Your work expenses claim is under £2,500
- HMRC hasn't sent you a notice to file
- You have no gains above the annual exempt amount
Not sure? HMRC has a tax return checker, or we can check for you.
Only need a single tax return?
We offer fixed one-off prices for individual tax returns, as well as ongoing packages.
When employees come to us
These are the situations that most often turn a simple payslip into a tax question.
High earners
Earning over £100,000? You start to lose your Personal Allowance. We use pension contributions and Gift Aid to reduce the impact.
Child Benefit charge
If you or your partner earn over £60,000 and receive Child Benefit, a tax charge applies. We work it out and report it for you.
Side income
Freelance work, a small business or app earnings alongside your job. We put your salary and side income on one return.
Accountant for self-employedRental income
Letting a property while you work? We report your rental profit and apply mortgage interest relief correctly.
Accountant for landlordsSavings, dividends and shares
Interest above your savings allowance, dividends and gains from selling shares or crypto all need reporting. We calculate what's due.
Capital Gains TaxTax refunds and expenses
Paying for uniforms, professional fees or business mileage yourself? You may be owed tax back, including for previous years.
Tax rules for employees in 2026/27
Allowances and thresholds that affect people on PAYE.
Child Benefit charge
The charge starts when the higher earner's income passes this amount and claws back all Child Benefit at £80,000.
Personal Allowance taper
Your Personal Allowance falls by £1 for every £2 of income above this amount, creating an effective tax rate of around 60%.
Personal Savings Allowance
Tax-free savings interest for basic rate and higher rate taxpayers. Additional rate taxpayers don't get the allowance.
Side income
The trading and property allowances let you earn up to this amount from each source before telling HMRC.
Marriage Allowance
A non-taxpayer or basic rate taxpayer can transfer this much of their Personal Allowance to a spouse or civil partner.
Expense claims
Work expense claims above this amount must be made through a Self Assessment return rather than a simple claim form.

Employed Individual FAQs
Do I need a tax return if I'm employed?
Usually not, if all your income is taxed through PAYE. You'll typically need one if you have side income over £1,000, rental income, untaxed savings or dividend income above your allowances, taxable gains, or you owe the High Income Child Benefit Charge. HMRC may also send you a notice to file.
How do I claim a tax refund for work expenses?
If your claim is under £2,500, you can usually claim without a tax return, and HMRC adjusts your tax code or repays you. Larger claims must be made through Self Assessment. You can claim for the current year and up to four previous years.
What is the High Income Child Benefit Charge?
If you or your partner receive Child Benefit and the higher earner's income is over £60,000, a charge claws back some of it. By £80,000, the charge equals the full Child Benefit. Pension contributions can reduce your income for this test.
How can I reduce tax if I earn over £100,000?
Your Personal Allowance falls by £1 for every £2 over £100,000. Pension contributions and Gift Aid donations reduce the income used for this test, so they can restore some or all of your allowance. Higher rate relief on pension contributions made personally is often claimed through a tax return.
How do I know if my tax code is wrong?
Your tax code tells your employer how much tax-free pay to give you. It can be wrong if you've changed jobs, have more than one job, receive company benefits, or HMRC has estimated other income. We check your code against your circumstances and ask HMRC to correct it if needed.
Do I pay tax on savings interest?
Only on interest above your Personal Savings Allowance, which is £1,000 for basic rate taxpayers and £500 for higher rate taxpayers. Interest in an ISA is always tax-free.
Can I claim for working from home?
Only if your employer requires you to work from home, for example because there's no office available. If you choose to work from home when an office is available, you can't claim tax relief for it.
How much does an accountant for employed individuals cost?
It depends on what you need, from a single refund claim to a full tax return with rental or side income. We offer fixed one-off prices and ongoing packages, with the price agreed before we start.
