Small Business FAQs
Does a small business need an accountant?
There's no legal requirement, but most small businesses with staff, VAT or a limited company use one. An accountant keeps you compliant, makes sure you claim every allowance and relief, and gives you figures you can use to run the business, which usually more than covers the cost.
What is the Employment Allowance?
It's a yearly reduction in your employer's National Insurance bill, currently up to £10,500. Most businesses with employees can claim it, but companies where the only employee is a director can't.
Which VAT scheme is best for a small business?
It depends on your customers, margins and cash flow. Cash accounting, available below £1.35 million taxable turnover, means you only pay VAT once customers pay you. The Flat Rate Scheme, available below £150,000, can simplify returns for some businesses. We'll compare the options for you.
Can I claim the full cost of equipment and vans?
Usually, yes. The Annual Investment Allowance lets you deduct the full cost of most equipment, machinery and vans, up to £1 million a year, from your profits in the year you buy them. Cars are treated differently.
How often should a small business get management accounts?
Monthly works well for businesses with staff, stock or tight cash flow. Quarterly suits steadier businesses. Management accounts show your profit, margins and cash position, so you can spot problems early and plan ahead.
Should my small business be a limited company?
Many small businesses start as sole traders or partnerships and move to a limited company as profits grow. A company can reduce tax and limits your personal liability, but brings more paperwork. We'll work through the numbers with you.
Can I switch accountants part way through the year?
Yes. You can switch at any time. We contact your current accountant for the information we need, take over your HMRC and Companies House authorisations, and make sure your deadlines are covered.
How much does an accountant for small businesses cost?
It depends on your turnover, number of employees, whether you're VAT registered and how often you want reports. We charge one fixed monthly fee, agreed before we start. You can choose a ready-made package or build your own.
