In short
What is a Self Assessment tax return?
A Self Assessment tax return is how you tell HMRC about income that hasn't been taxed automatically, such as self-employment, rental, dividend or foreign income. You file it online by 31 January after the end of the tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April, and pay any tax owed by the same date. An accountant prepares the return, claims your allowances and expenses, and files it for you.

| 1 day | £100, even if no tax is due | Interest starts on unpaid tax |
| 30 days | No extra filing penalty | 5% of tax unpaid |

| 6 months | £300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher | A further 5% of tax unpaid |
| 12 months | A further £300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher | A further 5% of tax unpaid |
Already received a penalty? If you had a reasonable excuse, such as serious illness, we can appeal it for you for £99 plus VAT. If you're in Making Tax Digital, a points-based penalty system applies to late quarterly updates.

Self Assessment tax return FAQs
When is the Self Assessment tax return deadline?
The online deadline is 31 January after the end of the tax year. For the 2025/26 tax year, which ended on 5 April 2026, you must file online and pay any tax owed by 31 January 2027. Paper returns are due by 31 October.
Who needs to file a Self Assessment tax return?
You usually need to file if you're self-employed with income over £1,000, a partner in a partnership, a landlord, have untaxed income, owe the High Income Child Benefit Charge, have capital gains to report, or HMRC has sent you a notice to file. HMRC's online checker can confirm whether you need to.
How much does an accountant charge for a Self Assessment tax return?
Our Self Assessment tax return starts at £150 plus VAT for employment or pension income. A sole trader return is £199 and a return with one rental property is £250, both plus VAT. Year-round support starts at £30 a month.
What happens if I miss the Self Assessment deadline?
HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty the day after the deadline, even if you owe no tax. Further penalties apply after 3, 6 and 12 months, and interest is charged on unpaid tax. Filing as soon as possible limits the penalties.
Can you file late or past Self Assessment tax returns?
Yes. We bring earlier years up to date and can appeal penalties where you have a reasonable excuse. Catch-up work starts from £199 plus VAT per year, and an HMRC penalty appeal is £99 plus VAT.
What are payments on account?
If your last tax bill was over £1,000, HMRC usually asks for two advance payments towards next year's bill, due on 31 January and 31 July. Each is half of the previous year's bill. We show you exactly what to pay and when, and can reduce them if your income falls.
Do I need a UTR number to file a Self Assessment tax return?
Yes. Your Unique Taxpayer Reference is issued when you register for Self Assessment. If you don't have one, we can register you with HMRC. You must register by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you first need to file.
Does Making Tax Digital replace the Self Assessment tax return?
For sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces the annual return with quarterly updates and a final declaration. Everyone else continues to file a Self Assessment tax return.
What expenses can I claim on my tax return?
Self-employed people can claim allowable business costs such as stock, travel, phone and software. Employees can claim work expenses they pay themselves, and everyone can claim relief on personal pension contributions and Gift Aid. We check every claim you're entitled to.
How long does it take to prepare a Self Assessment tax return?
Most returns are ready within 10 working days of receiving complete records. We send your return to you for approval before filing, and confirm once HMRC has accepted it.
