Accountants who know Scottish tax

Income tax works differently in Scotland. The Scottish Parliament sets its own rates and bands, so a tax return prepared as if you lived in England can mean paying the wrong amount. We apply the Scottish rules to your earnings, profits and rental income, and plan around them.

  • One agreed monthly fee, with no hourly charges
  • Qualified AAT, ACCA and ICAEW accountants
  • HMRC and Companies House deadlines tracked and filed
Six tax bandsScottish income tax runs from a starter rate to a top rate

Scottish accountant FAQs

Can you do my Scottish tax return?

Yes. Scottish taxpayers file Self Assessment with HMRC in the same way as the rest of the UK, but the tax is worked out using Scottish rates and bands. We prepare and file your return with the correct Scottish rates applied.

How do I know if I'm a Scottish taxpayer?

It depends on where your main home is. If you live in Scotland, you're usually a Scottish taxpayer, and your tax code will start with the letter S. If you've moved to or from Scotland during the year, we'll check which rules apply to you.

Does Scottish income tax apply to dividends and savings?

No. Scottish rates apply to earnings, pensions, self-employed profits and rental income. Savings interest and dividends are taxed at UK rates. This difference matters when company directors choose between salary and dividends, and we'll help you plan the best mix.

I'm a landlord in Scotland. What do I need to know?

Your rental profits are taxed at Scottish income tax rates, and when you buy a property you pay Land and Buildings Transaction Tax rather than Stamp Duty, with an extra supplement on additional homes. You also need to register as a landlord with your local council. We prepare your rental accounts and tax return and can explain what applies to you.

Do limited companies in Scotland pay different Corporation Tax?

No. Corporation Tax and VAT are the same across the UK. The difference is in how the directors are taxed personally, because salaries are taxed at Scottish rates while dividends are taxed at UK rates.

Do I need an accountant based in Scotland?

No. We work online with businesses across Scotland, from the cities to the islands. You share records digitally and speak to your accountant by phone, email or video, on weekdays until 8pm and on Saturday mornings.
